The large chamber at the Ballard Locks has been closed since Oct. 12 for the first of four scheduled extended closures to begin replacing the chamber’s filling culvert valves. The 102-year-old valves, used for flooding and draining the large locks, are the same kind used for the construction of the Panama Canal. The valves are called Stoney gate valves, 14-foot-tall steel doors, originally invented in the 1800s by Irish engineer Bindon B. Stoney. Plumbing Drainage Castings The large lock will remain closed for up to 53 days, with a scheduled reopening Dec. 3. That’s a month longer than the typical November annual maintenance closure of two to three weeks. The small chamber will remain open during this time and vessels up to 28 feet wide by 123 feet long are able to use it. Almost everyone who is involved with 3D printing thinks to themselves at some point, “this could all be done using a closed-loop system and DC motors”. Or at least everyone we know. There’s even one commercial printer out there that uses servo control, but because of this it’s not compatible with the rest of the (stepper-motor driven) DIY ecosystem. [LoboCNC] wanted to change this, and he’s in a unique position to do so, having previously built up a business selling PIC-based servo controllers. His “servololu” is essentially a microcontroller and DC motor driver, with an input for a quadrature encoder for feedback. The micro takes standard step/direction input like you would use to drive a stepper motor, and then servos the attached DC motor to the right position. It even signals when it has an error. The unfortunate side effect of [LoboCNC]’s old day job means that he can’t release the code that’s running his demo, but he says he’s working on a version of the firmware to open-source. Have a look at a demo video (below) of his modified servo printer that’s being driven by a standard stepper motor controller. It is certainly accurate! If you want to get up to speed on all of this...

Exclusive: Huawei in early talks with U.S. firms to license 5G platform – Huawei executive

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Blacklisted Chinese telecoms equipment giant Huawei is in early-stage talks with some U.S. telecoms companies about licensing its 5G network technology to them, a Huawei executive told Reuters on Friday. Vincent Pang, senior vice president and board director at the company said some firms had expressed interest in both a long-term deal or a one-off transfer, declining to name or quantify the companies. “There are some companies talking to us, but it would take a long journey to really finalize everything,” Pang explained on a visit to Washington this week. “They have shown interest,” he added, saying conversations are only a couple of weeks old and not at a detailed level yet. The U.S. government, fearing Huawei equipment could be used to spy on customers, has led a campaign to convince allies to bar it from their 5G networks. Huawei has repeatedly denied the claim. Currently there are no U.S. 5G providers and European rivals Ericsson (ERICb.ST) and Nokia (NOKIA.HE) are generally more expensive. In May, Huawei, the world’s largest telecoms equipment provider, was placed on a U.S. blacklist over national security concerns, banning it from buying Ameri...

GuardBunny Active RFID Protection Going Open Hardware

There are two sides to every coin. Instead of swiping or using a chip reader with your credit card, some companies offer wireless cards that you hold up to a reader for just an instant. How convenient for you and for anyone who might what to read that data for their own use. The same goes for RFID enabled passports, and the now ubiquitous keycards used for door access at businesses and hotels. I’m sure you can opt-out of one of these credit cards, but Gerald in human resources isn’t going to issue you a metal key — you’re stuck hauling around that RFID card. It is unlikely that someone surreptitiously reading your card will unlock your secrets. The contactless credit cards and the keylock cards are actually calculating a response based on a stored key pair. But you absolutely could be tracked by the unique IDs in your cards. Are you being logged when passing by an open reader? And other devices, like public transit cards, may have more information stored on them that could be harvested. It’s not entirely paranoid to want to silence these signals when you’re not using them. One solution is to all of this is to protect your wallet from would-be RFID pirates. At this point all I’m...

Ballston Beach from the air looks a bit like a battle scar, the dunes flattened by frequent storms. Image by John Tlumacki. United States, 2019. To traverse the Sagamore, from the north, or the Bourne, from the west, is to cross the boundary between work and play. As the last girder shrinks in the rearview mirror, the road opens onto the pine-fringed mid-Cape expressway. Already those knotted neck muscles are beginning to soften and uncoil. The beaches we love — Marconi, Cahoon Hollow, Nauset, to name three — are still miles away. But the worst of the dreaded Cape traffic is behind us now. We are in a postcard land that evokes a particular memory, a four-word poem, for anyone who has had the good fortune to experience it: Summer on the Cape. But this is no vacation. The Cape we love is at risk now. Cape Cod is perched on a stretch of ocean warming faster than nearly any in the world. And as much as we might wish it away, as hard as we try to ignore it, the effects of climate change here are already visible, tangible, measurable, disturbing. Perfect summers have grown hotter and muggier. Storms arrive violently, and more often. Occasionally, nature sends up an even more ostentat...

Netflix Touts ‘Stranger Things’ Mobile Game, ‘Dark Crystal’ Game Adaptation In First E3 Show

Netflix made its first appearance at the E3 video game conference in LA Wednesday, showcasing new game efforts tied to Stranger Things and The Dark Crystal during a panel discussion. One news development during the session was the announcement of a Stranger Things mobile role-playing game, which is on tap for 2020. The location-based game, developed by Finnish firm Next Games, will allow players to explore The Upside Down hidden around them in their daily travels, the company said. The third season of Stranger Things hits the streaming platform on July 4, and the accompanying console game will be available on that same day in digital-only form across the major gaming platforms. The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics will follow later this year, timed to the release of the rebooted Jim Henson fantasy property. On a broader level, the streaming giant came to E3 to send a message about the importance of gaming in its outlook on original programming and maximizing its revenue potential. A couple of years ago, when Stranger Things broke out in its first season, the company embarked on its first serious licensing and merchandising effort, as recalled by panelist Chris Lee, head o...

Mood across machinery industry is ‘negative for second time in a row’

The ‘general business climate index’ across the agricultural machinery industry in Europe is negative for the second time in a row. In July, evaluations of current business and future expectations were both negative for the first time since 2016. However, during this month (August) the evaluation of current business levels has stabilised slightly – contrary to expectations. Based on the “strong order intake in the past”, CEMA says that the volume of orders is still high (corresponding to a production period of 2.9 months). However, a significant slowdown in incoming orders is expected. Across Europe the notable (positive) exceptions are France, Switzerland, Italy and Spain. In these countries, a majority of survey participants expect turnover increases. This data comes from CEMA’s Business Barometer. It’s a monthly survey of representatives from the European agricultural machinery manufacturing industry; it’s been running since 2008. The survey covers most major equipment sectors – from tractors to municipal equipment. The target group (of respondents) comprises 140 senior managers from nine countries. Meanwhile, last month (July) saw decreases in new (self-propelled) combine ha...
